OF THAT EPOCH known by the Nemedian chroniclers as the Pre-Cataclysmic Age, little is known except the latter part, and that is veiled in the mists of legendry. Known history begins with the waning of the Pre-Cataclysmic civilizations, dominated by the kingdoms of Kamelia, Valusia, Verulia, Grondar, Thule and Commoria. These peoples spoke a similar language, arguing a common origin. There were other kingdoms, equally civilized, but inhabited by different, and apparently older races of man.

Five hundred years later the kingdoms of the world are clearly defined. The kingdoms of the Hyborians: Aquilonia, Nemedia, Brythunia, Hyperborea, Koth, Ophir, Argos, Corinthia, and one known as the Border Kingdom – dominate the western world. Zamora lies to the east on the inland Vilayet Sea, and Zingara to the southwest. Far to the south sleeps Stygia, untouched by foreign invasion.

Into this world strides CONAN, a barbarian stripling of cold Cimmeria who travels far and wide fighting and wenching his way across the world for decades, eventually finding himself crowned king of storied Aquilonia. This ancient oblong coin of fabled Stygia depicts the Moon Goddess on obverse, in portrait mode, holding two vipers in her hand, signifying control of commerce and war. The heiroglyphs incised behind her speak of invoices, bills of lading, and the boring necessities of the mundane material world. The vertical orientation of the image implies the dominance of mankind over nature, and the control of populations by the ruling class.

The reverse side is in landscape mode and features the serpent-god SET. This side depicts the spirit world where demons lurk, spells are cast, and where the mighty serpent-god that disgorged the universe waits. The horizontal depiction signifies that humankind must be submissive to the will of SET, for he may choose to take you at any time.

Not that Conan ever cared a whit for any such nonsense! To such as he, these coins were nothing but cash with which to purchase wine, food, weapons, and women. And as such valuta they are good money, 8.5 grams of solid copper, worth a heady draught in a low-life tavern, or a toss of the dice in a street-corner game of chance. But these days it would take many together to secure a night of pleasure in a Nemedian brothel or a solid meal at a Corinthian Inn. As they say: “A lunar just doesn’t buy what it used to!” So make sure you have several, King Conan’s Coffers have plenty and to spare! So pull up a chair and join the game. You are most welcome to join Conan on his next adventure, whatever that may be. You can be sure it won’t be boring!
