The tip of each boot lace (or 'aglet' to those who like precise terminology) is made from ferrocerium (a fancy name for a man-made metallic material) and makes a spark when you strike it against the included steel plates. Each ferrorod is capped with a removable rubber cover to keep the flint protected. To create a spark, just slide off the cover and push a ferrorod against the included steel striking plate.

These are a great backup plan in any weather condition!
